FTRC Goes International: Benidorm 10K Race Report
After a thrilling and busy year of running, the Farnham Town Running Club (FTRC) made the exciting leap to international competition, choosing the picturesque resort of Benidorm for their latest adventure. This choice was fuelled by its similarities to Farnham, making it an ideal backdrop for a weekend of camaraderie and athletic challenge.
The Journey Begins
On Friday, a group of 22 eager athletes boarded early flights from Gatwick, the excitement palpable in the air. These flights were filled with runners, all buzzing at the prospect of a vibrant weekend where the love for running mingled beautifully with evenings spent in lively bars, indulging in delicious restaurants, and enjoying leisurely beach walks.
Race Day: Saturday
Saturday dawned ready for action, with 21 of our members opting for the 10K race and Ryan tackling the half marathon. Though the evening start time initially raised questions, once the race began, the thrill of running through cheering crowds and bustling bars provided an unmistakable adrenaline boost.
The *10K route*, while scenic, presented its challenges. The race commenced with a steady uphill stretch that tested runners’ pace management skills. However, after conquering the initial climbs and reaching the 3K mark, athletes enjoyed a swift descent toward the beachfront, where the energy of the crowd heightened the experience.
The path along the beach, almost 5K long, was well-supported, and at the 5K mark, runners were greeted by a water station. Here, the importance of caution was evident; the wet, slippery Spanish roads could catch even the most experienced athletes off-guard. Nevertheless, the pleasant 15-degree temperature and refreshing sea breeze made for ideal running conditions.
At 8K, fatigue set in as participants faced a short, challenging incline reminiscent of Castle Street, a local landmark. However, the reward was immediate. Runners descended a charming cobbled street lined with enthusiastic supporters, creating an atmosphere that invigorated spirits.
The final kilometre led competitors along the infamous Benidorm Strip, which culminated in a demanding 100-meter uphill section. Yet, the sounds of cheers from the crowd propelled them forward, offering that final push needed to cross the finish line.
Achievements and Memories
The race was a resounding success, with many participants achieving personal bests and leaving with unforgettable memories of a well-executed event. The camaraderie and shared experiences solidified the bond among club members, emphasizing that FTRC is about more than just running, it is about our little running family.Post-Race Festivities
As the sun set on race day, the post-race celebrations began. Participants gathered to recount their favourite moments, share laughter, and enjoy a bit of karaoke. The rest stays on tour. One hilarious story that stood out involved a club member who had been purchasing beautiful egg cups on her travels, only to later discover that her kitchen cupboard was filled with an assortment of shot glasses instead.
Did I forget to mention our runner going around the bars asking strangers if they would like to touch his medal?
This weekend was a wonderful reminder that the strength of our running family lies beyond the miles logged; it’s about forging great friendships and creating lasting memories. The laughter muscles were as sore as our calves, proving that a weekend like this blends fun and fitness brilliantly.
As FTRC reflects on this amazing trip, it’s clear that Benidorm has added a special chapter to our running adventures. Here’s to many more miles, memories, and laughter in the future!
